The Hapsburg's July Crisis 1914
Today, June 28, 2024, marks the 110th Anniversary of the assassination of the Austrian heir-presumptive Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie Marie. Their brutal murder kicked off the great European Civilizational War that lasted from 1914 to 1945 and ruined much of the world.
Tomorrow, I will look at the context of their murder, its motivations, and how the archduke was perceived immediately before and after he was slain. Current popular opinion has been too often shaped by postwar propaganda and diplomatic deceits that disregard the political reality of the era and obscure the moral and religious stakes of the crisis that destroyed old Europe, perhaps for all time.
