There is a critical distinction between a Christian nation and a Christian state. One that keeps getting lost, usually because the people obscuring it have an axe to grind. A nation has to do with people: it is a demographic question, and it has always been understood that way. A state is a sovereign government — that is what the word means. We should not allow academics or ideologues to muddy this, because their modern frameworks are incompatible with how people actually lived, then and now.
